Sport-études, CEGEP, U Sports, NCAA — four pathways, four very different timelines. We've coached teens to all of them. Position-specific training from three former pros, multi-year roadmaps, and the honest assessments that recruiting needs (and that most Montreal academies won't give).
Each pathway has its own timeline, requirements, and culture. Picking the right target is half the work — picking the wrong one wastes 18 months. Here's what each looks like.
Quebec's school-day-integrated training program. Players train during school hours alongside academic classes — the most demanding youth pathway in Quebec.
What it is: Sport-études (recognized program in selected Quebec high schools) lets identified athletes train 5-10 hours per week within their school day. Soccer Sport-études programs run at specific schools with affiliated clubs.
Quebec's collegiate level (post-high-school, pre-university). RSEQ Division 1 / Division 2 / Division 3 leagues at CEGEPs across the province.
What it is: CEGEP soccer is competitive but accessible — every CEGEP fields a team, and many take walk-on tryouts in addition to recruited players. RSEQ Division 1 is the most competitive tier.
Canadian university soccer (formerly CIS). Most rosters are filled by recruited players from CEGEP / U18 club teams or international transfers.
What it is: U Sports schools recruit primarily from competitive provincial U18 leagues, CEGEP teams, and the elite Canadian club system. Walk-on opportunities exist but are rarer than CEGEP.
Division I, II, and III in the United States. Most demanding non-pro pathway — combines athletic recruitment with academic and standardized-test requirements.
What it is: NCAA recruitment is a multi-year process: ID camps, showcase tournaments, GPA + SAT/ACT requirements, NCAA Eligibility Center registration. Most Canadian players who land NCAA spots played in the Canadian soccer pyramid through their teens.
Big academies rotate coaches. We don't. The coach who builds the tactical pattern with your kid in week 1 is the same coach in week 60. That continuity matters more than any single session does.
We watch game film with the player, not at them. Most teens already know what they did wrong; the value is what they should have seen 2 seconds before. That's a coachable skill — and not many Montreal academies spend the time on it.
If your kid isn't an NCAA Division I athlete, we'll say so — early, before you spend $10,000 on showcases. Then we'll tell you where they CAN play (D-II, NAIA, U Sports, CEGEP D-I, club U18). Honest scouting saves families a lot of pain.
One session is enough for us to assess where your teen is now, where they could go, and what timeline makes sense. We'll be honest about all three — that's the value.
